Genetec launches the SV-PRO, unified video surveillance and single access control in a single appliance

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Genetec launched yesterday the SV-PRO, a true hybrid solution on the market that offers unified video surveillance and access control in a single appliance. Powered by Genetecs unified security platform, the Security Center, the SV-PRO can also be deployed in video-only and access control-only installations.

The launch of the SV-PRO expands Genetecs series of SV network security appliances, adding a device ideal for mid-size and standalone hybrid applications to the mix. Genetec has also extended the power of unified security to the SV-16 which is the network security appliance targeted for small sites and distributed installations..

This recent Powered by Genetec initiative not only supports the ongoing shift towards IP-driven solutions but fulfills the markets increased demand for combined software and hardware solutions, says Francis Lachance, Product Manager at Genetec. With Security Center pre-loaded on the SV-PRO appliance, customers benefit from a powerful and flexible unified platform with the simplicity of installation and maintenance of an all-in-one solution.

With a variety of deployment options available to customers, the SV-PRO can accommodate up to 100 cameras, or up to 256 readers, or in the case of a unified solution, up to 50 cameras and 128 readers. Security Centers open architecture allows customers to select their preferred hardware from a list of industry-standard cameras and door controllers, or even re-use existing equipment.

More than that, customers can also select their preferred software package to better accommodate their specific requirements. For instance, smaller installations will benefit from Genetecs Standard packages with just the right feature set, while customers with mid-size deployments can take advantage of the more advanced features in Genetecs Pro packages.

The new rack-mountable appliance is robust, reliable and built to the highest specifications. The SV-PRO features a redundant power supply option, dual-port network card and internal hot-swappable storage options up to 12TB, offering significant recording capacity for more demanding video applications.

Like other Genetec SV appliances, software upgrades and updates require minimal effort. Adding additional IP devices to the SV-PRO is as easy as acquiring another license since camera and door licenses are obtained individually. Similarly, simple software upgrades allow customers to immediately benefit from new Security Center releases and transitioning to server-based storage only requires a quick licence change. Ensuring additional investment protection, the SV-PRO is also backed by a 3-year hardware warranty.

Genetecs unification strategy also extends to the complete SV product line, enabling access control and video capabilities on the SV-16. The SV-16 is the perfect fit for small locations requiring unified security with up to eight cameras and eight readers, or up to 16 cameras or 16 readers in single application deployments. The SV-16 is also an ideal choice for multi-site distributed installations when used with Genetecs Federation.

Initially, the SV-PRO will only be available in North America. The SV-PRO and SV-16 will be showcased at ISC West, booth 21061, from March 28-30, 2012, in Las Vegas.

Seamless management of IP and security data for enterprise CCTV installations

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Bosch launched a new version of the Video Management System (BVMS), making it more flexible and extending its use into even larger enterprise installations. BVMS version 3.0 now supports up to 2000 camera inputs and 100 workstations. The increased scalability allows many new application opportunities and system designs.

The system seamlessly combines Bosch IP cameras and encoders, DVRs (Digital Video Recorders) and Allegiant matrix switches in a single user interface. Version 3.0 supports the latest Bosch HD (High Definition) cameras such as the Dinion HD 1080p and FlexiDome HD 1080p. With focus on simplicity and usability, every operator can manage all this with little to no training.

As part of the increased overall system reliability, the new Independent Operator Client ensures live viewing. Playback and export is still possible even if the central server is not reachable or the connection has a low bandwidth. In addition, IP cameras can now record on motion or IVA detection independently of the central server, further enhancing system reliability.
Out-of-the box configuration for various recording solutions minimizes installation costs and protects existing investments.
Simplified and faster configuration of recording settings are further enhancements. Settings can now be configured per camera group according to the real-life project, while managing technical differences of various camera types automatically. The Configuration Client now also offers device filtering for easier configuration in large systems.

All live and archived video data can be viewed at any location on single or multiple work stations simultaneously. The BVMS provides system-wide event and alarm management, system health monitoring, user and priority management from installations that span buildings, campuses, cities, or even countries.

The BVMS is covered by a Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA). For existing users of the system who have a valid SMA, the upgrade to version 3.0 is included. New purchases of the software package include 1 year SMA free of charge.

The Bosch division Security Systems is a leading global supplier of security, safety, and communications products, solutions and services. Some 12,000 associates generated sales of 1,36 billion euros in fiscal 2010. Protection for people’s life, buildings and assets is the aim. The product portfolio includes video surveillance, intrusion alarm, fire alarm and voice evacuation systems as well as access control and management systems. Professional audio and conference systems for communication of voice, sound and music complete the range. Bosch Security Systems develops and manufactures in its own plants across the world.

10 Home Security Tips – Know Your Enemy

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Here are ten home security tips know your enemy so that you can defeat him.

Most people feel secure in their own home if they have never been burgled or had an unwanted visitor, but the fact it hasnt happened YET doesnt mean you are secure. It merely means your home security has not been tested.

10 Home Security Tips To Keep Your Family Safe

These ten home security tips contain verifiable Home Office Home Security statistics, and anecdotal research gained from speaking with previous offenders, because as Sun Tzu the great Chinese general said, To defeat an enemy, you must first think like them.

  1. Burglars do not like a challenge. Thieving is their business, they want a very fast turnaround process, delivering a quick profit. They will not choose your home to burgle unless you offer it to them as an easy target. Make a few changes, and with each, you reduce the attraction. Roughly three homes are burgled every two minutes in Britain.
  2. Most burglaries are opportunist. The burglar will roam the area looking for the most inviting properties to enter. They will first look for unlit or remote properties, and those with valuable items on display. Then they look for evidence of any security features alarm boxes, outside lights on sensors, securely constructed doors, windows with locks and lights on behind closed curtains. Any visual deterrent will usually make them move on to easier pickings elsewhere.
  3. Many people youll have to read this twice do not make ANY changes to their previous poor security that is recommended to them after they have been burgled, and therefore unsurprisingly more than half receive a second visit within four years. Dont all business people prefer repeat business with a customer who makes their job easy work?
  4. Only half of burglaries are carried out by strangers from another area. The other half are carried out by people from your own locality who will have at least some knowledge of, or link with you, regardless how tenuous. It is thought that the rise in drug related crime creates this, as drug abusers stay local and will carry out individual random burglaries for a the price of a fix.
  5. In 20% of burglaries they dont even have to break in, doors and windows are left unlocked. 70% enter through a door, the rest come through a window. Secure doors and frames, and secure locks on accessible windows are less expensive than the large rise in your insurance premiums for being a victim. One of the first things sought is car keys that are often left by the front door which was unlocked more insurance premium rises
  6. Most burglaries occur in the evening, not early hours of the morning, as they are less conspicuous. Carrying a 42 telly down the street at 3am is not a regular occurrence. Moving house in the evening is, so even though 20% of burglars are seen in the act, its not always obvious that a burglary is occurring.
  7. Nearly 90% of burglars are male, with more than a quarter of burglaries being done by two. Given that over 20% are caught in the act in a house, your main concern should be to prevent their access in the first place. Aggravated burglary with violence is on the rise, because the penalties are no more severe, and the rise in drug related offences means you have no idea of their mental state.
  8. Less than 1 in 5 burglaries are successfully detected, and property is returned in less than 10% of cases. Insurance premiums rise in 100% of cases. 8 out of 10 people whose homes have been violated in this way are seriously emotionally affected long term.
  9. If you do disturb a burglar, let them run! Catching them and bringing them to book is the job of the Police. If your valuables are insured, replacement shouldnt be a problem. Nothing in your home is worth your life.
  10. Reduce your target value. Make sure that every statistic youve read above remains totally irrelevant to you. Always keep lights on and curtains drawn when youre out to avoid people looking in, maybe have lamps on timers if youre away long term. Keep valuables hidden. Lock windows and doors. Have an alarm fitted. Make your home your castle by all means, but keep the moat filled, the drawbridge up and the portcullis down.

Genetec’s Omnicast video surveillance system installed at Fulham Football Club to protect patrons

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Fulham Football Club, Londons oldest first class football club, has installed Genetecs Omnicast video surveillance system in its 22,000-seat stadium.
Genetec is a pioneer in the physical security industry and a leading provider of world-class unified IP security solutions.

When Fulham recently sought a new video surveillance platform, Nicholas Pendlebury, Head of IT Projects at Fulham, brought on EMC, a global provider of information technology services, to assist in the design of a new system. Genetecs Omnicast was chosen for its open architecture and its ability to improve both security and operational processes at once; not only enhancing safety but also crowd control and monitoring procedures.

Fulham required undisrupted video coverage, as well as image quality that would enable operators to zoom in on individual faces in a crowd. Sixty-three Axis Communications cameras, 25 of which are PTZ, utilizing joysticks for simple camera angle manipulation were installed. Using Axiss network cameras, Fulham is able to use built-in features like motion control for alarm triggers out of hours and privacy masks to limit PTZ field of vision from encroaching on neighbouring private property. Thirty days of archived video are stored on 100 terabytes of EMC Celerra storage that are shared with Fulhams file storage. The Omnicast system has full failover capabilities and the infrastructure is monitored 24/7 via a site-to-site VPN.

Fulhams Omnicast system is used largely for live monitoring on match days, at which time police, Fulham stewards, and medical staff convene in the Control Centre to monitor the tens of thousands of stadium patrons.

Everyone has praised Omnicast, saying its one of the easiest systems theyve used, said Mr. Pendlebury. Ease of use is especially important given the number of individuals who take turns manning the system, many of whom are not Fulham employees. Video footage can also be called up within seconds instead of days, especially with the added aid of the instant replay feature, providing drastically reduced incident response time.

Omnicast has addressed our main security needs, but also provided numerous additional features. It has changed our lives. It has made our safety team a lot more responsive and proactive, with less work and less stress. We have even saved money by requiring less staff to review tapes. Between the ability to easily bookmark incidents as they occur, and quick video archive navigation, there is now far less wasted time.

Future plans include an upgrade to Genetecs unified video surveillance and access control platform, the Security Center, and the inclusion of Plan Manager, a feature that enables interactive, spatial mapping of cameras to further facilitate system navigation. Additional plans for a nearby training facility include the installation of 25 high-definition cameras, thermal imaging and deployment of Genetecs license plate recognition system, AutoVu, which can also be unified within the Security Center.

We are pleased to have been a part of this historic clubs evolution. We are aware of the challenges inherent in securing large crowds in these types of facilities, and we have done our utmost to create a platform that quickly and easily serves up the data that is most relevant in this fast-paced environment, said Cavan Kendall, UK National Sales Manager at Genetec.

Phil Doyle, Regional Director for Axis Communications, Northern Europe said: Using network cameras as part of this security solution means that Fulham will benefit from much more than simply capturing images. Gone are the grainy images so often associated with older CCTV systems. This technology is proven and will provide images that can be used to identify people or objects if an incident occurs.

Introducing wireless 2MP IP Video Surveillance Camera from Toshiba

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Toshiba Surveillance IP Video is bringing wireless ease to indoor video surveillance with its IK-WB16A-W two-megapixel IP camera equipped with 802.11n wireless connectivity.

Megapixel resolution enables a single IK-WB16A-W to wirelessly capture overviews of very large indoor areas, such as a grocery, shopping mall or casino, as well as high-detail situations including close-ups on items being checked out by a cashier.

The camera’s wireless flexibility and versatile Pan, Tilt, and digital Zoom (PTZ) gives installers greater freedom to mount it wherever detailed video surveillance is required, including areas not wired with Ethernet cabling. Once installed, the camera’s live video can be viewed and camera movements controlled by either a network linked PC, notebook, tablet or smart phone.

The IK-WB16A-W supports simultaneous quad streaming of MPEG-4 and MJPEG video in a variety of resolutions to provide both higher quality and optimal bandwidth efficient compression formats. A maximum of ten clients can simultaneously access live video plus record video directly onto a PC hard-drive or NVR. Additionally, the camera features a Micro SD card slot for local storage in the event of connection failure or tampering. An advanced 1/3.2″ CMOS progressive scan sensor delivers flicker-free, ultra-sharp color video up to 30 frames-per-second without picture blur. User-selectable resolutions range from megapixel 1600 x 1200 to cell-phone size 176 x 144 pixels. There is also a 4X digital zoom to take advantage of higher resolution settings.

The IK-WB16A-W package includes free versions of Toshiba camera recording software to enable:
* video recording, exporting and uploading;
* motion detection and alarm recording;
* auto pan (175) and tilt (+90 to -35);
* and 2-way audio communications.

Camera licenses are included with no re-occurring annual software upgrade fees, making the IK-WB16A-W the most cost-efficient wireless 2MP camera on the market today. The K-WB16A-W ships fully assembled, ready to install and is backed by a three-year warranty. Optional mounts and housings allow the camera to be safely installed outdoors.
