Sevenoaks is a pretty Kentish town. It has up-market shops, a famous public school and Knole Park, where you can take a picnic and watch the deer. In fact, it is probably the last place that you would think is a hotbed of crime.
During the year from March 2014 to February 2015, there were no less than 2,169 crimes reported to police in Sevenoaks, Kent. As with most towns, anti-social behaviour was top of the list, closely followed by crimes of sex and violence.
However, there were also an astonishing 236 burglaries during the year.
This is all the more surprising, because there are many wealthy people living in the area, who take care to protect themselves and their families with burglar alarms and security lighting.
Thieves Are Targeting Homes With No Security
However, there are also many homes that do not have security installations and it is no doubt these that are being targeted by thieves. Any self-respecting burglar is not going to tackle a home that has obvious security, if he can help it, so he will go looking for easier prey.
Did you know? Most convicted burglars (90%) said they want to avoid homes with alarm systems.
Furthermore, even if a burglar gets caught, he only runs a very small risk of going to prison. Of those 2,169 crimes during the year, just 28 offenders received a prison sentence. So less than 1.3% of all criminals ended up in prison.
That’s a pretty scary figure and makes you wonder if crime does pay after all. Certainly, the Sevenoaks burglars seem to think so.
The Obvious Answer
Of course, the obvious answer is to protect your home with a burglar alarm. In addition, you can add security lighting and/or a CCTV camera system.
Many people seem to be under the impression that having professional security installed is expensive, but what is the true cost of a burglary?
You could be risking not only your possessions, but your family's emotional well-being.

Reduced Insurance Premium
Your insurance company will almost certainly offer you a reduced premium if you tell them that you now have a burglar alarm. They know full well that you are at far less risk of a break-in, and they in turn are at less risk of having to pay out on a claim. Over a few years, your burglar alarm will pay for itself.
Probably the most important factor is that you are at far less risk of losing items in your home that cannot be replaced. Yes, you can buy a new TV if yours gets stolen, but there are always things of sentimental value that cannot be replaced, no matter how much your insurance company pays you.
When you look at the shocking burglary figures in Sevenoaks, installing a burglar alarm is just common sense.
