Old Bexley and Sidcup is a largely suburban area, sandwiched between industrial north Kent and densely populated south-east London. However, the burglary statistics make frightening reading, especially when you compare them to places like Brixton and Herne Hill in South London, where you would suppose that the figures would be far higher!
Old Bexley & Sidcup 2014/2015 – 439 Burglaries
The burglary statistics for Old Bexley and Sidcup are far worse than you might imagine. According to ukcrimestats.com, from May 2014 to April 2015, there were no fewer than 439 burglaries!
This compares with just 117 for Brixton Hill and 142 for Herne Hill over the same period. These two areas were featured very largely in the London riots of 2011, and have been described as the “drugs capital of London”.
It comes as a shock to learn that what you might think would be a peaceful area, is actually far worse than some of the inner London boroughs.
So why are burglary statistics for Old Bexley and Sidcup so high?
Why is there such a difference between crime statistics in these areas? One possibility is that a large part of the Brixton and Herne Hill areas consists of housing that was built in the 18th – 19th centuries. These were large houses built for the large families of the day.
Today, most of those houses have been converted into flats which means that a very high number of residences are above ground floor level, and so not as easily accessible to burglars.
Is your home easily accessible to a burglar?
Compare that with the amount of housing in Old Bexley and Sidcup which was built in the 1930’s to 1960’s and consists of two, three or at most four bedroom family homes – all of which are easily accessible.
The higher burglary statistics for Old Bexley and Sidcup may also have something to do with the fact that homes in Brixton and Herne Hill are less vulnerable to a burglary attack. They may have more protection in the way of burglar alarms or CCTV systems, than the homes in their North Kent counterparts do.
This suggests that homeowners in the London suburbs have realised they are easy pickings and have taken precautions accordingly.
Refuse to be a victim of burglary
The answer, of course, is to take all possible steps to protect your home or business from burglary wherever you live. Any self-respecting burglar is going to think twice if he can see that a home has a burglar alarm, perhaps together with security lighting or CCTV.
Did you know? The presence of a burglar alarm is thought to be the reason why 74% of attempted burglaries fail to complete
If there is one thing that you can guarantee about burglars, it is that they don’t want to get caught. They will always look for an easier option, don’t let that easy option be your home.
