The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) for the year ended June 2014 shows that there were an estimated 7.1 MILLION incidents of crime against households and resident adults (those aged over 16) in England and Wales. This figure is actually 16% lower than the previous year’s survey results, but nonetheless is shocking.
What it shows is that, on average, you have around a 12% chance of being a victim of crime in any given year, and – again on average – you will be a victim every eight and a half years. What a shocking indictment of the state of this country’s law and order.
Of course, you could go all your life without incident, but then again, you might be a victim every year or two. These estimates – and they are only estimates – include crimes which are not reported to the police.
However, the actual police recorded crime figures for the same year to June 2014 show a figure of 3.7 million cases, which is the same as the previous year. No reduction was reported. On that basis, you will still be a victim of crime every 16 years or so, or five to six times in the average lifetime.
How can I protect myself?
The obvious answer is to take every precaution that you can in order to avoid becoming a victim. This includes things like being very aware of your personal security. For instance, don’t leave your wallet, purse, or mobile phone in the hip pocket of your jeans. Sadly, it is so easy for a thief to steal it and simply disappear into a crowd. You can also consider protecting your home by installing CCTV camera systems. This will to deter thieves away from targeting your home.
Equally, don’t leave your car key in the ignition on the driveway while you go to pay for your petrol. Just how long does it take to remove the key from the ignition?
Nowhere is attention to your security more important than your home. The problem here is that you go to work, go to the shops, to the gym, or wherever else and leave it empty.
Burglars know this. That is exactly what they are waiting for. They know that you are going to leave your home empty for half an hour, an hour or perhaps all day.
Did you know that the average burglary takes just eight minutes?
That’s how long it takes for your local friendly burglar to steal everything of value in your home and probably ruin your life.
Yes, you can be insured, but there are all of those treasured possessions that can never be replaced. It’s a fact that some people are so traumatised by a burglary that they cannot remain in their home and have to move elsewhere.
The obvious answer is to install a burglar alarm, together with security lighting and possibly a CCTV camera. Burglars tend to want an easy life. If they see a home that has high security, they will just avoid it and look for one which does not.
If you think about it, this makes complete sense. People whose homes have high security simply do not get attacked so often as people whose homes do not. This is why every police force in the country recommends installing burglar alarms, and why insurance companies reduce premiums for people who do have them.
Of course, as a homeowner - the choice is ultimately yours. For your own sake, make the right decision.
