Kent Police have started a campaign to raise awareness of burglary risks during winter. According to the Freedom of Information data that Liverpool Victoria recently obtained from police, more burglaries occurred during November than any other month.

Many suggest that this is a cause and effect situation of the clocks going back during October and night creeping with seasonal change. This campaign launch has become cross-county, areas taking part to spread safety awareness include Sussex, Surrey and Thames Valley.

Data revealed that the possibility of burglary within properties varied depending on various aspects of prevention. The aim of the #LightLockList campaign is to inform the public on specific prevention tips that could have a huge impact on how your home is viewed by potential burglars.

The main three steps being promoted are

Home Security Kent

Light – Keep lights on during times the property is unoccupied. This is probably the most common tip that you will come across when searching for burglary prevention. As this information is so widely spread, much debate exists on its effectiveness.

As a clear priority for not only this Police campaign, but within the Met Police Operation Bumblebee section, it’s better to stay safe than sorry this winter. Timed alarms can be a great way for your lighting to look realistic while you’re out of the house.

Lock – Keeping your property locked and bolted, all over. This second tip is to deter burglars who may experience open windows as an open invitation to steal your household items. Burglars love opportunity, do not give them the perfect one!

List – Valuables such as electrical products, jewellery and bicycles can be registered for free on www.immobilise.com. This website works as an online database, assisting Police in successfully identifying the owner of stolen items.

Spare Keys, unsecured sheds or garages and vulnerable elderly are just some of the things burglars will be on the lookout for according to BBC Crimewatch Roadshow.

Useful Tips

1. Remove waste bins from areas near gates and hedges. Burglars have been found to use these to climb onto private property

2. Dude, where’s my car? Be aware of where your car is parked. If your car has not been seen on your driveway for some time, a burglar could take this as a sign you’re on holiday for Christmas

3. Keep keys in secure locations, not poking out the keyhole or on the window sill

4. Be creative with your hiding spaces. If a burglar has broken into your home, chances are they will head to the bedroom and search drawers for your precious jewellery

5. Double check the locks before you leave. Locking all the windows and doors before you leave your property in the morning could be the difference between returning to a full or empty home

6. Get a burglar alarm for your home!

Simple solutions to what could be a devastating problem for many are currently being spread across Social Media networks using #LightLockList. To find out more about the Campaign, visit Kent Police UK
