A new guide on the use of CCTV in small shops has been launched by the Home Office at the Association of Convenience Stores' (ACS) Crime Prevention Forum.
The guide offers retailers in small shops practical guidance and information on how to get the most out of their CCTV systems. Just as the process of buying a new TV involves some research before you buy, you need to be sure that the system you choose actually meets your requirements and gives you a return on your investment.
A new Surveillance Camera Code of Practice is also the subject of statutory consultation and, if approved by Parliament, will come into force in summer 2013. The goal of the code is to strike the right balance between upholding civil liberties, whilst still protecting the public.
Chief executive of the ACS, James Lowman, said: "CCTV is crucial to many retailers and this guide will help them optimise its value, providing staff and customers with piece of mind and deterring criminals. We also welcome the Government’s consultation on the CCTV Code of Practice and we urge retailers to be mindful of the provision in the Code when they install CCTV within their business."
Alastair Thomas from the Home Office Police Transparency Unit launched the new guide at the forum and explained the Government’s work on regulating CCTV and other surveillance camera systems through a code of practice being prepared under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012.
The Crime Prevention Forum also addressed the new powers proposed under the Draft Anti-Social Behaviour Bill, presenting the findings of the Commercial Victimisation Survey, vulnerability in the retail supply chain, staff theft and fraud.
