GUIDE TO FIRE EXTINGUISHERS FOR BUSINESSES

What types of fire extinguisher do I need?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 your fire-risk assessment must match extinguisher types to the hazards present. BS EN 3/BS 5306-8 usually means water or foam for ordinary Class A risks, foam or CO₂ for flammable liquids/electrical kit, ABC dry-powder for mixed risks, wet-chemical for commercial kitchens and specialist dry-powder for metal fires. Lithium-ion risks may need AVD units.

Fire extinguishers are typically colour coded to indicate which type of fire they are for, based on the source material involved. Doing a site-specific fire risk assessment will give you the information you need to determine the size considerations and quantities needed for your premises.

Frequently asked questions

Have questions about fire safety, our services, or compliance requirements? You're in the right place. We've compiled answers to the most common queries we receive to help you learn more about our fire protection services

What size fire extinguisher do you need for your business?

In private residential settings like houses and flats, fire alarms should be tested once a month. We advise individuals to test their smoke alarms at least once a month, which is the standard advice from UK Fire & Rescue Services and is widely accepted as best practice.

How many extinguishers do you need?

The size of your business is important when it comes to deciding how many extinguishers you need. The general rule of thumb is to have at least one 13A rated extinguisher for every 200m2, and at least two on every floor.

How often should fire extinguishers be tested or serviced?

The responsible person should do monthly visual checks of your extinguishers, but you should do annual services by experienced technicians to ensure your items are working properly. This should all be logged in your fire-log book.
