Whether you’re stuck for a resolution or have five you’re trying to juggle, the following resolution is an absolute must-have. Test your smoke alarms once a week. Checking your smoke alarm regularly can be the difference between a healthy start to the year and a disastrous one.
Alarmingly important - test your smoke alarm!
- Budget smoke alarms will usually have batteries included. You must make sure this battery is working at full efficiency.
- Once a week, test your detector by pressing the button until the alarm sounds.
- Once a year, change the battery in your alarm.
- Twice a year, it is recommended you gently vacuum dust from inside the alarm.
- Smoke alarms need to be replaced at least once every ten years.
- Whichever model you choose, make sure it is branded with a BSI kitemark.
- Specialist alarms are available for people with hearing difficulties.
Here’s a checklist to help you start the year safely:
- Do you have an escape plan if a fire is started?
- Does every member of the property know this escape plan?
- Do you have a smoke alarm on every level of your property?
- Have you checked your smoke alarm is working this week?
- Do you check that all cigarettes are extinguished?
