Most people use January as a month of reflection and personal improvement.

The most common New Year’s resolutions include:

➤Healthy living and fitness
➤Losing weight
➤Improving diet
➤Saving money
➤Pursuing a career ambition
➤Giving up smoking

Are these the answers you were expecting to see?

To some, choosing a New Year’s Resolution is incredibly easy or even repeated from the year prior. Some of these resolutions such as giving up smoking are focused on our health and well-being.
They’re about safeguarding ourselves, our lifestyles and our health. But what about our homes?

Home is where the heart is

During the January period, you may be so busy taking part in your new fitness routine that you forget to ensure safety. This can be solved easily by adopting a new habit throughout this year’s first month.

Whether you’re stuck for a resolution or have five you’re trying to juggle, the following resolution is an absolute must-have. Test your smoke alarms once a week. Checking your smoke alarm regularly can be the difference between a healthy start to the year and a disastrous one.

Alarmingly important - test your smoke alarm!

Fire Alarms Kent

  • Budget smoke alarms will usually have batteries included. You must make sure this battery is working at full efficiency.
  • Once a week, test your detector by pressing the button until the alarm sounds.
  • Once a year, change the battery in your alarm.
  • Twice a year, it is recommended you gently vacuum dust from inside the alarm.
  • Smoke alarms need to be replaced at least once every ten years.
  • Whichever model you choose, make sure it is branded with a BSI kitemark.
  • Specialist alarms are available for people with hearing difficulties.

Here’s a checklist to help you start the year safely:

  1. Do you have an escape plan if a fire is started?
  2. Does every member of the property know this escape plan?
  3. Do you have a smoke alarm on every level of your property?
  4. Have you checked your smoke alarm is working this week?
  5. Do you check that all cigarettes are extinguished?

If you answered no to any of these questions, it’s time to take action.
