Whether it's for your business or a home, there are a number of reasons why you might need a door entry system.

Apart from any other consideration, door entry systems are easy and inexpensive to install, and they give you a considerable amount of extra security.

It is a somewhat sad comment on the state of Britain in the 21st century that we have to be so security-conscious, but that is the way it is. Anything that you can do to keep your home or premises secure is to be welcomed.

Two Main Types Of Door Entry Systems

There are basically two types of door entry systems:

  • Manned - those that enable you to communicate to the person at the door with microphones and cameras
  • Unmanned - those that require a code, fob or even biometrics to grant access

There are various pros and cons to each and these are broken down further below.

Home Door Entry Systems

For example if you only have voice contact, a caller could claim to be bringing you a bunch of flowers from a florist on Valentine’s Day, but actually be planning something rather more alarming. If you can see the caller, you can then see whether he or she is carrying a bunch of flowers or not.

Prevent Distraction Burglary

One particularly devious tactic used by criminals is distraction burglary. This method of burgling your house is particularly effective - one gang member talks to you at the front door and the other enters your house through a back door or window, grabbing whatever they can.

A door entry system will give you the advantage of not having to to to the door when it rings.

This is particularly useful for the occupants of flats and apartments which may be several floors away from the main entrance but also for home owners who are busy doing something and don't want to have to go to the front door whenever the doorbell rings.

In both cases, a video AND voice door entry system is vital so you can see as well as hear who is there.

Business Reasons For A Door Entry System

Of course, if you operate a business, there may well be other reasons that you need a door entry system. It may be something as simple as just needing to know who is at the door and letting them enter your office.

Obviously the manned system is best for you, operated by a secretary or receptionist.

However, you might have dozens of employees and want to control their access to various parts of your site.

For this, you can have unmanned door entry systems that are operated by a pin number which the employee has to enter – we have all seen those. If an area is restricted, only those employees allowed to enter will have that pin number.

Door entry systems can also be operated by a chip-bearing fob, a good feature if your employees aren't great at remembering pin numbers.

There are of course more high tech 007-esque security systems such as in finger print or iris scan technology. These are remarkably effective, though aren't usually necessary for day to day businesses.

As we said earlier, it is a somewhat sad indictment of our times, but in many businesses security is paramount.
