The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that the person responsible for the business must ensure that any facilities, equipment and devices for the provision of fire safety “are subject to a suitable system of maintenance and are maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair”. British Standard guidance calls for a quick weekly test. It is recommended to do this during working hours by triggering the alarm, checking the panel and sounders, and recording the result. This will help you identify any potential faults. If you have more than one alarm, rotate these over time by testing a different call point each time.

How often should your fire prevention systems be serviced?

To keep your system in good working order, periods between professional inspections should not exceed six months. To test these, an engineer will typically check detectors with simulated smoke or heat, look at the batteries and clean the device. This should all be updated in your log book.
