Suspicious Cold Callers in Sussex

The Rye and Battle Observer reports that the local police are advising residents to be alert after there was a suspicious cold call via telephone trying to sell intruder alarms in Burwash.

On Friday 19 April at just before 1.15pm, a man who identified himself as ‘John’ telephoned the resident and claimed that he worked for a security company selling alarms and tried to get the address so he could book an appointment for an assessment.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police was unable to confirm whether this was a genuine sales call as, whilst the company he claimed to work for does exist, the caller refused to send a brochure. They had advised the occupant to report the incident to Trading Standards.

However, in the meantime, they cautioned that anyone receiving a similar call should not reveal whether or not they already have an alarm as ‘you cannot be sure who you are giving this information to’
